Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve likely heard that there’s a massive staffing shortage in the U.S. Good Morning America and ABC News talked to Shuckin’ Shack’s CEO, Jonathan Weathington, about the battle of hiring.

“Now Hiring” signs are in the storefronts of small and big businesses alike. Employment openings are at an all-time high. New numbers released from the U.S. Department of Labor say that as of this morning, there are over 9.3 million job openings. With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that every industry is suffering from the staffing shortage. The leisure and hospitality industry took a particularly hard hit with job openings up 1.2 million from last year.

Shuckin’ Shack decided to tackle this problem head on by offering incentives for new hires, promoting current employees, raising starting pay, and cultivating a work culture of having “A Good Shuckin’ Time!” Although these efforts have helped with hiring and employee retention, the staffing shortage remains an ongoing issue.

“For us, the biggest challenge has been people not showing up for interviews,” says Weathington.

As the pandemic is nearing the end, Shuckin’ Shack is seeing a surge in business and all locations are hiring to keep up.
